Ron Paul Wins New York Republican Straw Poll

                               

Ron Paul, Congressman from Texas running for President won the first Republican straw poll held in New York State. With 26 votes, Ron Paul trumped New York City native Rudy Guiliani in his own back yard. Rudy took second place with 21 votes.The straw poll was held at the Metropolitan Republican Club on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Metropolitan Club is the oldest Republican Club founded in 1902 and is also where Rudy Guiliani announced his candidacy for President.A lively debate was moderated by club member Jason Weingardner. It covered topics popular to the Republican base including taxes, government spending, education and foreign policy.  Metropolitan Club President Bob Morgan said this of the show of support for Ron Paul; “It was good to see them bring energy to the debate.”Representing the winning candidate, Avery Knapp said “Ron Paul, represents a return to traditional republican values. He will return fiscal discipline to Washington.”The other candidates represented at the debate included, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Guiliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney. A representative from the Fred Thompson campaign attended, but did not participate.The straw poll win follows a record setting day in fundraising for the Paul campaign. Ron Paul raised $4.2 million in 24 hours on November 5th. This is a single day fundraising record for the Republican Party.
